For one of our offering, we wanted to put some flex advertisement boards on the road side. After inquiring, we came to know that we have to take permission from Municipal Corporation. One of the guy went to corporation and figured out the process. What we came to know that we have to take the permission and pay a rent for the same. When we went to take the permission and pay the rent, we realized that the permission is given only for 15 days and has to be renewed every 15 days. The rent was Rs. 2 per sq. ft. To pay the money and to get the process completed took more than 20 minutes and we were the first in the queue. After doing all the process and paying the money, the guy told us that now we have to pay the tax on it. And the tax has to be paid at a different place. Luckily the other department was also nearby. At the tax payment counter, we explained the person and he was behaving as if he does not knows anything. After explaining everything for couple of times than he presented himself as knowing the issue. I was expecting that to calculate the tax, he would ask us the rent that we have paid and based on some %age the tax will be paid. To my surprise, he asked the size of banner. We told him 120 sq. ft. And now he wants the calculation to be in sq. mt. and based on that the tax is calculated. And the funniest was that he was not sure how to do the conversion.

To be or not to be at times looks to be a deep philosophical question. It is a constant struggle, in many passing moments of life to try to fathom the question of how to live that moment. We carry so many images of our self inside us. And we constantly struggle to find out which self to carry at that particular moment. The various images of self, coloured with all sorts of super heroes and flesh heroes churned with our strength and weaknesses developed during time, presents us in many unique ways at many different moments of time. After the moment is gone, the way we have posed at that moment mesmerizes us. But this is just an afterthought.

We constantly struggle to figure out how to live a particular moment. I am purposefully not using the work behave as behaving is only superficial. "Living" brings the complete depth of us in that moment. Behaving is just one part of us. In hindi there is what we called man, karma and wachan, which translates to our mental thought process, our actions and dialogues. All three together decide the complete self. Our behaviour is primarily our dialogues and a part of our action, which are visible. The other part of action, which are hidden from outside and our thought process which is very private determines the complete self.

The major confusion in the self comes because of incongruity between man, wachan and karma. The peace lies in bringing complete synchronicity between three. The serenity lies there.

Two interesting events in last couple of days. First there are elections in Maharashtra. I was walking next to main road to my office and suddenly there was a huge cavalcade of vehicles. Big car, small cars and a host of bikes. Someone got the ticket to fight the election. Slogan shouting and roaring vehicles ketp passing for almost ten minutes. No traffic rule got observed in the way. Many vehicles came on the wrong side of the road, which forced the vehicles in the opposite direction to go further on the sideways, putting many pedestrian in danger.

Today, I went to pay municipal taxes. The specific details are not important as this is same everywhere in India. The computers were down, so it was all manual. To my luck, they opened the other counter, when I reached there. I stood in the new line and two guys away from my turn. Someone decided to close the new counter and I was back to square one. Now in this line, I was two guys away and the clerk decided to take a break. He left the seat to have his tambaku break. The paradox is that the office was having anti tobacco posters all round, one right above his head. Someone remarked that the fevicol should be put on the seats of babus, which will force them to sit atleast. Fortunatel he came back in couple of five minutes. And my turn came soon. to my dismay, he copied all the details of the tax bill on his bill book. I am sure it must be stored somewhere and could not figure out why he has to copy everything again. But than who can question them. The government offices are one where you have to beg to pay the money. Luckily I finishes and was back. Total time approx. one and a half hour.

At present the major threat to the world is terrorism. And unfortunately the major reason behind terrorism gets attributed to godly concepts. In the name of god, people are massacred mercilessly. The most affected people in this are the people on the street, who work hard to earn their living and has nothing to do with these extreme philosophies. They do believe on god and religion, but it's a private affair for most of them. God and religion is a dedicated affair for them, which provides them with mental solace and has nothing to do with bombs and bullets.

It is a paradox that such a noble concept like god is tarnished with blood of human. Why time and again, people use the name of god for killing people and not building the life of people? I believe the true nature of this problem lies in mixing the concept of god and religion. Most of the world follow the religion as if it is god, but it is not.

Let's first understand what god is? I think no one knows what god is or who god is. Personally I do not agree with anyone who says that he or she has seen or talked to god. Yes, but there is a god or something like god, but it is unknown. It is too grand a concept for us humans to understand. When we human could not understand each other, how we can claim to understand god? The earth is a tiny speck in the scheme of universe and a particular individual is even tinier. Still we human feel so much proud of ourselves and our achievements. The achievement might look grand, but they have no importance in the grand scheme of universe. Let's get back to our question of, who is god? I wish that I would have a simpler answer to this question, but I do not have. The god is beyond our comprehension. The common underlying theme is however that there is a power which is beyond us. The moot point here is that this sense is common in all religions and sects, theist and atheist.

Now let's understand what is a religion? Religion is a much simpler phenomena as it is created by human and anything created by human is simple to understand. Religion is a simple body of rules and regulation which tries to govern the life of human. In fact there is nothing god about it. Each religion is a perception of god by the originators of that religion. And that perception was influenced by contextual environment, which includes social, political, economic situations and also the psychology and personal belief of the originators. Let's do an analogy here. We all understand the concept of country. A country is a geographical area. But each particular country is different in itself. No one can say that one country is better than other. On a bigger time scale, all countries will even out in terms of comparison. In one century, one country was better but than in a couple of century other become better and this cycle will go on. Similarly god relates to the concept of country, and religion is the perception of that country converted into rules and regulation governing that country. And we live, love and die for our country as if this is the ultimate phenomena. Think in a little different way, it is just a geographic boundary, which actually isolates us from folks of neighboring countries. The concept of country, is again a convenient notion to divide the people and maintain the power for some people similar to religion. I am not saying that we stop loving our country, but we should be more understanding about people around us. Similarly we can follow our religion as a culture but can be more accommodating with people around us.

Once this differentiation is clear, it will be easy for us, humans to discern the difference between god and religion. All the infighting that we do has to do with the thinking that the religion is ultimate, and which is not. The ultimate is god, which no one of us understand and let's not fight for what we do not understand.

At this moment when I am writing this blog, twitter is exploding with the tags Iranelection, Tehran, Iranians, Moussavi

This is the aftermath of the election which Ahmadinejad has won by landslide victory but saw millions of people on the streets of Iran opposing it. This is not a new phenomena considering that it has happened umpteen times in the history of World. Many revolutions has been done like this.

What is different in this is the way the online media, web in particular is participating in it. At this moment if you go to twitter you will realized how the moment by moment picture is getting updated.

Mir Hossein Moussavi at the moment for Iranian is not just a candidate who lost the presentational election but represents the crusade against the so called unfair means that Ahmadinejad employed for winning the election. Moussavi represents the hope for Iranians for a more just society and a better interaction with the world. The hope for growth and good life. A painter and architect, Iranians are looking to him to paint and architect the new Iran. At this moment we donot know how the event will turn but it is for sure a new kind of revolution that is happening. There are people on the ground and there are people sitting in front of their computer all around the world participating in this revolution.

It started with a twitter message from Moussavi “ALL internet & mobile networks are cut. We ask everyone in Tehran to go onto their rooftops and shout ALAHO AKBAR in protest #IranElection.”

Biographical Details of Mir Hossein Moussavi
Birth : 29 September 1941 at Khameneh, East Azarbaijan, Iran
Education : Architect with specialization in Islamic Architecture
Other Credentials:
  • Prime Minister of Iran 1981-1989

Kudos to social media like twitter to build such a phenomena.
